Sky Digital hacked - Not quite!! Pssst - Wanna buy a funny looking box26th August 2002It seems a strange box is currently doing the rounds and everything may be topsy-turvy in the Hackers v Sky battle, but there's a catch that probably won't be mentioned as you are tempted to be parted with your hard earned cash.Box office movies, Premiership Football for FREE!! And all with a little box that looks suspiciously like a telephone extension socket with a PP3 battery, a few wires and a bit of tape, this sounds great, here's my £10 Quid (upwards!!), but wait, it will work forever won't it? - It seems not.In fact relatively speaking the fiendish box IS a telephone extension socket with a PP3 battery and a bit of tape (or heatshrink sleeving on the up-market models - who knows how much these will fetch!!).
I have seen lots of requests and comments posted over the years about this topic. I hope the little knowledge I have on this subject will give you some idea of how complex it is and why it's pointless (as well as illegal) trying.Sky and Sky + boxes made by all manufactures are based on similar chip sets and processors. It is in the best interests of manufacturers and suppliers not to provide access to schematics (circuit diagrams) and details of components so as not to give anyone the opportunity to hack Sky NDS encrypted systems. The block diagram is of the ST Omega processor and shows the multiple functions it carries out. ST along with Conexant make the majority of chips for STB's and PVR's.
As the diagram shows there are a lot of devices running the processor which all play a part in decrypting the satellite data streams. Details on some of these devices and their function is pretty much non existent and seem only available to manufacturers and developers. Some data sheets on PIC.FLASH, and the SDRAM chips can be found on the Internet but without software, plus a good knowledge of coding and programming interfaces the hacking of them is next to impossible.

Limited success in turning a Sky+ box into a subscription free pvr seems to have been achieved on the following site Sky+ pvr Hack ![]() ![]() In conclusion I think for the sake of saving yourself £10 a month you may as well save up and get a freesat HD pvr. As for hacking Sky decoders it's never going to happen. The moment they get a sniff of a problem they have too many software variables which would render a large scale hack harmless. ![]() Comments are closed.
